Helping Build Tuscarawas County's Future

Economic Potential:

Tuscarawas County is situated in the heartland of the nation's great industrial base.

The Cleveland-Akron-Canton industrial complex is just to the north, while Pittsburgh is less than two hours to the east and Columbus is 90 minutes to the southwest.

The county is located within 500 miles of half the population of the U.S. and Canada, more than half of the nation's manufacturing, and more than a third of the nation's farmers.

Interstate 77 is an important artery bisecting the county.

New Philadelphia's airport can accommodate most corporate aircraft, while three railroads, bus lines and nearly two dozen trucking companies provide other transportation.

The Akron-Canton Regional Airport, approximately 35 minutes away, offers commercial passenger and cargo services.

Tuscarawas County's diverse industrial community is expanding and has positioned itself in worldwide markets.  The growth of small and midsize businesses has stimulated job creation in several communities.

Tuscarawas County OCED Areas of Responsibilities:

The Tuscarawas County Office of Community & Economic Development (OCED) serves as an advocate for “community specific” projects as well as economic development projects that benefit the county as a whole.  The office provides technical and financial assistance (primarily through grants) to the smaller communities and townships as well as nonprofit organizations such as Senior Citizens, Handicapped Society/Independent Living Center and Volunteer Fire Departments within our county.

Community Development Projects:

The OCED staff is aware of the importance of strong, healthy communities and devotes a significant amount of time to working with villages and townships to complete needed infrastructure improvements and occasionally address larger community needs, such as Community/Senior Centers, Playgrounds, and assistance for Volunteer Fire Departments.  In most cases, if federal grants are involved we will be responsible for all phases of these projects from design and engineering through construction.

Economic Development Projects:

The OCED office has been a major player in economic development both prior to the formation of the office and since its creation in 1994.  We have been heavily involved in both the Bolivar/Lawrence Twp. and the Newcomerstown Industrial Parks, and were responsible for obtaining funds and continued our involvement through design and construction of the parks.  We continue to work with local development partners in retention and expansion of existing businesses and the recruitment of new and/or relocation companies.

Our office maintains close relationships with various local and state departments in order to serve the county more efficiently.  Please visit our additional site pages in order to view links and/or departments associated with our office, research specific programs, and complete printable forms for the various programs administered by our office.
